Issues and Debates – AQA A-level Psychology Topic Overview
The Issues and Debates topic challenges students to think critically about how psychological knowledge is developed and applied. It examines the assumptions, biases, and values that underpin psychological theories, and how these impact research and real-world applications.
Key areas include:
Gender Bias – Understanding androcentrism and alpha vs. beta bias in psychological research.
Cultural Bias – The impact of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism in the development of psychological theories.
Free Will and Determinism – The debate over whether behaviour is freely chosen or shaped by internal/external forces.
Nature vs. Nurture – Exploring the influence of genetics and environment on human behaviour.
Holism and Reductionism – Whether human behaviour is best understood by breaking it down or looking at it as a whole.
Idiographic vs. Nomothetic Approaches – Differences between studying individuals in-depth vs. establishing general laws.
Ethical Implications of Research – How psychological findings may influence societal views and policy, especially in socially sensitive research.
This topic deepens students’ understanding of psychology as a science and encourages reflection on how values, assumptions, and ethics influence both research and theory.
This bundle was created using the latest AQA A-Level Specification (published June 2019) although content and activities may be useful for other specifications.
This bundle includes a complete lesson and activities for the A-Level Issues and Debates Topic.

Please see individual lessons for further details of the content included.
Work booklet given to students to complete independently. Makes an excellent summer project or revision resource. Students had some knowledge of the issues and debates content but had not covered it in any great depth. This booklet therefore contains enough detail for them to have a good understanding of the content but also leaves enough gaps for the students to use their existing knowledge and additional research skills to complete. Knowledge review questions are included at the end of every sub topic.
As always, I recommend students use the Tutor2u and Simply Psychology sites as a point of reference.
Levels of explanation picture credit to Tutor2U Psychology.
8 page workbook with accompanying 44 slide presentation, designed to be used in tandem. The workbook contains learner tasks; the presentation contains the answers (in red)
This complete resource is designed to be picked up and taught with little preparation. Focusing on the demands of Eduqas component 1 contemporary debates, this workbook examines the demands of the 20/24 mar essays though the use of interactive class based activities. The assessment objectives and mark schemes are examined in detail and exemplars of best practice given, as well as activities that encourage students to put these new skills into practice. The workbook contains examples of model and flawed answers for students to assess, with expert feedback and answers provided on the PowerPoint.
The work book will take approximately 1-2 class-time hours to complete, or alternatively can be set partly or in whole as a homework task.
While designed for the Eduqas specification, this resource is also appropriate for the WJEC specification.
