Introduction to group discussion - speaking and listening skills

(0)
A comprehensive and engaging one hour lesson to help students to improve their group discussion skills. This lesson looks at two short examples of discussions and asks students to explicitly label what techniques are being used and how the chairperson is moving the discussion forward. The lesson ends with students completing a short discussion on the topic of ‘which subject should be removed from the timetable?’ They then self-reflect upon this using the success criteria that they created earlier. This could be used with key stages 3 or 4 to introduce group discussion skills or to revise them. 11 slides in total plus a worksheet. Origami Speaking & Listening Task – Build Teamwork & Communication Skills

(1)
Engaging Communication and Teamwork Activity – Origami Instructions Challenge This tried-and-tested activity has been a consistent favourite across a wide range of ages and abilities. Now updated with a fresh, user-friendly design, it’s perfect for developing essential communication and teamwork skills in a fun, hands-on way. How it works: Learners work in pairs or small groups. One learner takes on the role of the instructor, describing step-by-step how to fold an origami shape using only verbal instructions. The other learner(s), the makers, must follow these directions without seeing the original design. The catch? They don’t know what they’re making until the very end! This setup challenges learners to think carefully about how they give and receive instructions, encouraging clarity, active listening, and patience. After the activity, groups reflect on their experience and discuss what worked well and what could be improved—perfect for reinforcing communication strategies. What you’ll need: Square paper for each participant Origami instructions (I recommend laminating them for durability and repeated use) Why you’ll love it: Encourages speaking, listening, and critical thinking Builds teamwork, problem-solving, and trust Flexible time frame – swap roles so everyone gets a turn Easy to set up and adaptable to any group size Let your learners take the lead and enjoy the laughter and learning that follows. If you try this resource in your classroom, I’d love to hear how it went—please consider leaving a review!

Pairs Speaking and Listening Game

(5)
I am using this as an ice- breaker for EAL and SEN children with poor literacy - firstly we'll go through the pairs on the IWB and then I&'ll give them a character/ half of a pair each and ask them to find their pair. Once they&';ve done this, I'm going to take the cards in and sellotape a different card to each child&'s back. Then they have to go around and to ask questions (only yes or no answers) to work out what they are AND find their partner.
