This lesson focuses on the factors which allowed William to win the Battle of Hastings.

The aim of this lesson is for the students to recognise how the factors link together (embedding GCSE skills) and how William could just have easily lost the battle.

The students have to first decide who might have said or did what in the battle before completing a card sort activity with various statements which they order into the different categories.

The learning tasks culminate in writing a narrative account of the events which is differentiated and key skills and prompts advise on how best to answer this.

The plenary checks understanding with a true and false quiz.

The resource is differentiated and gives suggested teaching strategies.

It comes in PowerPoint format which can be amended and changed to suit.

A well presented lesson on the 1066 Battle of Hastings in the run up to the penultimate lesson of the Battle of Hastings created for KS3 history students on Microsoft Powerpoint

A little about the lesson

Students explore the Battle of Hastings between two of the contenders Harold Godwinson and Duke William of Normandy. Students uncover the sequence of events during the battle, they encounter a codebreaker task and look at some of the imagery of the Bayeux tapestry. Students consider advantages and disadvantages of each army throughout the lesson. Students then apply their learning to a written exam technique task.

Students are guided into answering an exam style question (AQA 8 mark question) with scaffolded sentence and a mark scheme for self assessment to help them begin to understand the requirements for GCSE style questions from an early stage. This can easily be tweaked, however, to tailor the resource to your exam board.

Whats included?

A whole 1 hour lesson powerpoint is included (there are teacher notes also under some slides). Student worksheets/resources are included in hidden slides in the relevant points of the presentation and also as an additional Powerpoint for ease of printing. Homework, Learning Objectives and outcomes have also been completed in this resource, however, they can easily be tweaked to suit the needs and ability of your classes. It is very likely this lesson will take beyond an hour to complete depending on the ability of the class and how long is spent on each task.

Keep an eye out for more new and updated lessons in my store and my weekly tutor time quizzes!

If you enjoyed this lesson, please review and check out my other lessons in this scheme of work looking at the Norman conquest 1066

Edward the confessor
Who should be king?
Harold Godwinson’s problems
The Battle of Stamford Bridge
The Battle of Hastings
Why did William win?
The problems of William in 1066

I had the pleasure of an Ofsted recently - this lesson was praised by the inspector!

Really straight forward lesson -

first 5 mins was recap on previous lesson on Stamford Bridge - lots of gated questions
They then watched the video - see ppt link - and I again asked questions following some feedback and thinking time.

They then completed the sorting exercise - lots of peer review and thinking time - about 10 to 15 mins

Once this was done they then responded to questions and then they completed the hierarchical triangle followed by the creation of a SPEEDL paragraph. This was supported by a writing frame to help the weaker learners - see the SPEEDL slide on the PPt.

To cap the lesson off we did a magpie minute - students walking round and taking nice ideas from other people's work and then develop their initial paragraphs with Purple Pen.

Overall a really pleasing lesson.

A power point designed to encourage historical enquiry and thinking skills. Works well with Kagan structures. All three of our KS1 classes have used it and we have been impressed with the level of thinking that it produced. We used it as 3 distinct lessons and got the children to vote for who they thought would make the best king and who they thought would have the best chance of winning the Battle of Hastings. We also did a mock Battle of Hastings using the hill on the school field and the children chose which side they wanted to be on whilst I narrated the story.
Updated 5.6.2015 to include differentiated worksheets to go with the powerpoint.
