This resource is 15 fully resourced sessions exploring the Anglo-Saxon legend Beowulf. Everything you need - models, PowerPoint slides, activities - is included in the ZIP file. The previews you can see show snippets of the first five sessions. It has been created for Year 5, but could be used in other KS2 classes. The unit draws on many versions of Beowulf. The model text harnesses the rich language used in Beowulf: dragonslayer by Rosemary Sutcliff. Each session has been carefully sequenced. The unit begins with immersion into the story through images and drama. There are also reading fluency and comprehension activities. Children in engage in short burst writing activities to learn and apply new skills. They also explore the key features of legends through a tool kit. Towards the end of the unit, children pick from a wide range of hot tasks, choosing the one that excites them most. Finally, children create their own legends, making use of planning grids and storyboards. This unit is ready to go. Creative teachers (and children!) will enjoy getting stuck-in to this one. Please also check out my other units, including ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’. with every lesson creatively planned in detail and many sessions resourced for SEN, EXP and GDS. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/theseus-and-the-minotaur-3-weeks-of-detailed-planning-fully-resourced-and-differentiated-11914692

Beowulf themed differentiated worksheets containing a variety of fronted adverbial activities, focusing on the first part of the story. The fronted adverbial worksheets are differentiated three ways. They contain a variety of fronted adverbial activities to develop pupils’ knowledge of fronted adverbials and improve their skills in using fronted adverbials in their writing. Pupils are asked to identify different types of fronted adverbials, re-write sentences to include fronted adverbials and commas, and write their own sentences with fronted adverbials including correct punctuation. The worksheet focuses on the first part of Michael Morpurgo’s re-telling of the epic Anglo-Saxon tale, Beowulf. Each worksheet comes with an answer sheet. Beowulf, news report

Reading comprehension! Drawing! Drama! High quality writing! Newspaper reports! These five fully resourced sessions aimed at Year 5 or Year 6 give children an opportunity to produce excellent non-fiction using a fiction context - no research required! Available in Word and PowerPoint so that you can edit and adjust to suit your needs. Through these 5 sessions, children will explore 3 news reports about heroes; generate their own toolkits; strip a fiction text (Beowulf) back to its bare bones; create captions and draw scenes from the story; take part in drama activities and finally write news reports using a consistent style and appropriate register. I have recently added useful editing questions for children to ask each other - I would suggest a final session for editing and improving. It is helpful (though not essential) if the children have previously explored the story of Beowulf. If they have not heard the story before, allow a little extra time to get familiar with the text (included). These sessions could make up a one week unit or be run over one day, as a writing workshop. Enjoy!

Year 6 Collection of Modelled Newspaper Report Examples BEOWULF

This is a collection of three newspaper reports I wrote as modelled examples of how a Y6 Greater Depth child might write. They are based on the story of Beowulf, but could easily be used as examples for any newspaper report writing. My class found them extremely useful to help structure their writing and provide them with phrases and vocabulary to use. All features of newspaper reports are included within them. Most Y6 skills are demonstrated too, including switching between formal/informal language in quotes and change of tense at the end. Enjoy!

This resource is for children who are practicing writing speech for narrative stories. It uses a Beowulf theme so there is a conversation between Beowulf and King Hrothgar. There’s two levels - Level 1 uses shorter sentences and words for children who struggle with longer passages. It also structures their ideas to get them to edit their work to include better adverbs and synonyms for said. Level 2 is more advanced. It encourages children to edit their work to include split speech and advanced the plot through actions. An additional sheet with potential answers for you to refer is provided too.

BEOWULF Cultural Discovery Activity

(2)
This is an excellent, jigsaw-type, collaborative activity to use as an introduction to the epic poem Beowulf. Essentially, students break into groups to look at only the Prologue and Parts 1 and 2 of the epic poem. Each group takes on the part of an anthropologist/archaeologist "digging" back into the past to learn about the world of the Anglo-Saxons. Each group receives a different set of questions about Anglo-Saxon culture to respond to by seeking out answers from the Beowulf text. Students then report their findings/ discoveries about Anglo-Saxon culture to the class. This is an excellent way to get students involved in active inquiry into a text. I typically do this activity BEFORE I give them any notes at all on Anglo-Saxon culture because I want them to see what they can discover on their own first. This activity is easily followed with a writing assignment in which students describe their findings using textual evidence. Included here are questions for 8 different groups per class (of course, in reality, you may have more groups per class, so you can simply repeat some of the questions amongst groups-- it's perfectly fine to see how two different groups approach the same questions because they will undoubtedly make different observations). Great way to get into the Beowulf story! This item is part of my MEGA BEOWULF BUNDLE that includes 25 lessons and activities with answer keys! You can find the ENTIRE bundle in our store, sold separately. Bundle and SAVE! Positive feedback is appreciated for FREEBIES :)
