Year 6 SATs Reading Comprehensions

(0)

Contains three classic fiction text extracts accompanied by SATs style questions with answers. The final text in the year 6 reading test is often very challenging and the associated questions require depth of understanding. It can be difficult to find suitable texts and develop suitable questions to practise the skills needed to do well in this section of the SATs reading paper.

This resource can help. It contains three:

Challenging classic fiction texts

Mini-tests containing 10 questions which are similar in style to those commonly found in this section of the test including questions linked to inference, evidence and impressions.

Answer sheets similar to the markschemes used in SATs.

Reading the text and answering the questions for each mini-test will take about twenty minutes - approximately the same amount of time the children will have to complete the last section of the reading test during SATs. This enables this resource to be used for test practice to develop test technique. The answer sheet can then be used to analyse and discuss suitable answers.

The comprehensions are based on the following books:
-Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
-Anne of the Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
-The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit

Year 6 SATS reading impressions questions PPT

(0)

Have you been struggling teaching your Year 6 class how to answer impressions questions in reading comprehension tasks? Do you want some support in giving a clear method with examples and practice questions? This PowerPoint might just be the answer. This Year 6 reading SATS preparation lesson focuses on impressions questions and supports the children to give answers that give two very different impressions of a person, place, object or setting.

This resource includes:

Steps to success

Examples of modelled answers

Practice questions for Year 6 pupils to have a go with

Answers given throughout

The method focuses around giving two very distinctive impressions. The analogy of a weighing scale is used to show that the two impressions should be different - kind and thoughtful, for example, would be too similar.

Please note that this PowerPoint is flattened (cannot be edited).

Inference - Guided reading inference lesson !!

(1)

Please find the guided reading inference lesson attached - This I did for an interview just last week and got the job as class teacher ! I had a small class of 15 children mixed ages from Years 3 -6 evenly split across the 3 tables and this lesson lasted for 30minutes.

On each table I put a pair of boots, a picture/photo sheet , a piece of text as you will see from the powerpoint then a set of bronze, silver and gold level questions. The children had just over 5 minutes to look at the picture, look at the object and read the text followed by answering the questions. This was accessible to all and the questions were harder in each level - after 5 minutes they then took the question sheet with them and went to the next table and repeated the process. After 15 minutes or so I stopped them as they had all then completed the 3 tables of inference work and brought the children to the carpet. I then talked through my plenary questions on the person as the powerpoint. The children then completed the little feedback slip on my lesson.

Both the Headteacher and governors really liked the lesson, as did the children and I have subsequently got the job !

Although it is based on me and my interests it could easily be adapted to suit anyone and encourage the children to play detectives for a change from the usual guided reading carosuel style activity - I feel this is a great lesson and great resource and would be a great revision tool in preparation for SATS particularly for Year 6 or just a different reading activity as I say for younger children. Any queries or questions do ask !!

Read, Find, Write Series

4 Resources

The 4 Read, Find, Write books are ideal for the crucial stage when children start to segment and blend words and learn high-frequency words. The series is progressive, with Book 1 using short phrases and a small number of first words and Book 4 using sentences and 100 common words. The sheets have been successfully used with KS1 and 2 children, who really enjoyed using them. The graded books are suitable for all beginner readers. The straightforward layout and slow, steady progression make the books particularly suitable for children struggling with literacy, who can use the sheets independently. This series fits in well with ‘Letters and Sounds’: the 4 books cover the 100 first words. Each book includes dictation and record/assessment sheets. Previously sold through Easylearn.

Read and Think Books 1-3

3 Resources

The three Read and Think books encourage poor readers, especially older pupils, to read sentences and simple texts and understand what they read. Book 1 concentrates on short, simple sentences. Book 2 looks at short narrative and informative texts and includes timetables and a calendar. Book 3 deals with short and medium-length narrative and informative texts. In each of the three books, pupils must understand the sentences or texts they read in order to perform the tasks and this ensures text comprehension. The 25 sheets in each book contain a variety of tasks which appeal to a range of pupils, including older, poor readers. Pupils are encouraged to deduce, infer, and interpret information and events. Vocabulary is limited to high-frequency words and the emphasis is on reading: very little writing is required. Previously available through Easylearn.
