Multiplication Olympics - Daily Training for Multiplication Olympians

(0)
The idea behind the Multiplication Olympics is to embed the work that most children
undertake in Years 1 4 to learn the multiplication tables up to 10. It has been designed to
'gamify' the learning process so that the children have to complete timestable squares in a
set time in order to progress to the next stage. The purpose is to engage and motivate
children to become faster with their mental arithmetic and to reward them each week for
their effort and success.

The Multiplication Olympics has been designed to last 6 weeks, over 3 booklets, with each
stage lasting one week. The premise of the game is to progress from a 'district level'
multiplication athlete into an Olympic Champion through repeated practice. At the end of
each stage, the children are also rewarded with certificates should they achieve predefined
times, which very gradually become more challenging.

A highly graduated approach to progression has been employed throughout; qualification
for week 2 Regional Level requires that the 10 x 10 square is completed in 7 minutes.
However, in order to become an Olympic Champion after 6 weeks, and an Olympic Gold
Certificate winner, the child will ultimately need to complete the grid in 1 Minute 30 seconds
(2 Minutes for silver and 2 minutes 30 seconds for bronze). This provides real challenge
for the most committed, whilst affording lots of opportunities to celebrate success along the
way.

We recommend that a 2 second penalty is applied for each incorrect answer but this is up
to your discretion!

It is envisaged that this resource could be used as:
An 'braingym' type warm up during registration in the morning or afternoon
A starter activity during numeracy lessons
 A homework activity each evening
A catchup or additional practice activity for children who need additional support with
mental arithmetic
