Pupils estimate how many times they can do certain things in 1 minute, e.g.how high a tower of cubes can we build? Using a minute timer, the group then completes the task and writes what the actual answer was.
Use with 3d shapes on each table. Children should pick up and handle the actual 3d shapes before completing the worksheet. Remember to reinforce that the worksheet shows depictions of 3d shapes, and not the shapes themselves.
Use with plastic coins - children draw around the coins to make 10p in as many ways as possible. Hand write 10p on each price label before photocopying. Could change it to 20p for HA children.

Can be differentiated - photocopy the blank sheet write the price of the item on the labels. Children colour in how many 2p (or 1p) pieces they would use to pay for each item. Can write higher prices for higher ability pupils. Extension task on giving change on page 2 of the HA sheet could be removed for MA children.

Used with the properties of materials unit. We tested the strength of various materials by cutting them into bag templates (each table had a different material) and then counted how many weights they could hold before breaking. The first half of the worksheet was completed before the experiment, and the second half once we had finished the experiment.
