Talk For Writing - Fairy Story - The Sorcerers Apprentice

This is a unit of work giving the suggested text, toolkits, boxing up sheets and guidance notes (plans). I wrote the text for a year 3/4 class. I have written this text from the original fairy story but it is a shortened version. I enjoy planning and writing 'Talk for Writing' units but understand some teachers don't have the time. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching this to my year 3 class and hope you enjoy it too!

This is a great resource that's like a game. The powerpoint shows the times table on a number stick. First, it gives children the strategies for working out the times table answers but then it shows how the children can learn to skip count the times table. My class enjoys shouting out the answers and it makes learning times tables a bit more fun than just rote learning. The peer to peer quiz allows children to test each other to learn their times tables. One child reads the one side of the paper and says the answers to each calculation the other child reads the answers and says 'yes' each time they are correct or 'try again' if incorrect. When the children get more able they can time themselves to see if they can get quicker.

4 Big Writing or One-off writing lessons with teacher led introduction (notebook file) and writing paper. A copy of 'Where the Wild Things Are' is needed to teach that particular lesson.

This has been designed to show a bar chart type illustration of the character's feelings throughout the text. The teacher can type in the box parts from the text where there is a significant change in the character's feelings. The children can then draw a line or box up to the level where they think the character's feelings are represented. I have done this activity guided and as an independent activity.
