Practice and learn 100 most common words in French. Translation game to reinforce the building blocks of everyday communication. Reinforce core vocabulary for KS3 and KS4. Words taken from Tony Buzan’s list of the most common 100 words in any language that make up 50% of everyday conversation. Teams play 3 in a row / connect 4 or navigate the grid side to side. Pupils give the grid number in French, then give the French translation of the English word. Click the red button to turn that square red / the green button to turn it green. Play regularly, pupils love it. They can take control by nominating a team captain who chooses who will answer for their team and clicks the button when you have confirmed it is correct. The grid can be printed out and given to teams to fill in prior to the game, and / or can be given to pupils to stick in their books and complete as they come across the words. Differentiate by allowing use of the completed grid. Extend by asking teams to come up with sentences using the words.

Uses modal verbs in a narrative scenario for asking someone out (tu veux , je ne peux pas , je ne veux pas)/ giving advice and instructions (tu dois…). Imaginative, adaptable resource, ideal for computer sessions. Built-in homework task. One off lesson or extended scheme. Assessment opportunity. Pupils complete the worksheet to ensure they understand the meanings of all the modal verbs and the contexts they are used in - can be done as homework. They can use the completed and corrected sheet as a resource to assist them in the next stage. The photolove story can be shown in class with groups deciding what each character is saying in each speech bubble. Pupils can then use IT to edit the powerpoint individually,in pairs or small groups. Can memorize their script and show their powerpoint to the class while they narrate it. Support by cutting sections out of the powerpoint to simplify it and / or giving the modal verbs needed in each speech bubble so pupils only have to find an appropriate infinitive and complement. Extend by getting pupils to add captions to the slides giving expressions of time (“Plus tard…”) or commentaries about what the characters are thinking. Make it more creative by asking pupils to use the internet to find pictures they want to use in their own photolove story. Some pupils enjoy staging and photographing their own original version. This
