Mathematics in the Real World Project

(3)
A project where pupils aim to research mathematics in real world scenarios. They have to research jobs, what maths is present in them and present their findings to the classroom. They are encouraged to research in a variety of ways, including the internet, papers, interviewing people and visiting workplaces.

Pupils should be in teams for this, with each given a specific role. They then present their findings to the class together. Pupils are encouraged to list resources they used.

This is a good project and works on relevance for mathematics in the real world to answer the ever burning question - "Where will I ever use this?"

Islands Scale and Bearings task

(2)
This task covers using scale and bearings as a delivery pilot in order to round off the topic. It has pupils using imagination and calculating beyond just scale and bearings as it brings in speed, distance and time, efficiency, planning etc.

Pupils will need a sheet of A3 paper for drawing the islands/their routes and their jotters for working. Use coloured pencils for the different routes for different parts of the questions.

The numbers are easily adaptable for classes of a lower or higher ability.

Fractions operations errors

(2)
Powerpoint to look at all four operations with fractions. Pupils decide if an error has occurred in the working for the questions. They have to identify this error, explain it and correct it to get the right answer. Pupils can work on their own, in pairs, groups or have class discussions (the most effective in my experience).

Pythagoras Introduction - Bob the builder

(1)
Powerpoint looking at introducing Pythagoras through an investigation where students need to be in pairs. Each pair has a number 1 and 2. Number 1 begins trying to draw the triangle accurately and measuring the third side, number 2 tries to create a calculation that works using the numbers. Number 1 can help when they finish their task. The pairs swap and keep doing this between slides. They then look for a link and try to use this on a few examples. This is then generalised to a generic triangle where the pupils come up with pythagoras theorem. This is then applied to the initial problem which sets the task going.

Pupils will need a calculator, ruler and jotter for this task.

Co-ordinates - Plotting and naming Constellations

(0)
In this file, pupils are given lists of co-ordinates which they must plot on separate grids. They are given a list of constellations that these represent, which they should try and name. Each list is plotted on slides, with points joined up by lines (needs clicked) to try to help them. The names of the constellations are under the red boxes.
