A sequence of five one-hour lessons designed to take the class from the very basic (this is a row; this is a column) to creating simple graphs and charts. These are presented in Excel spreadsheets designed for display on an IWB or individual screens but you could also print them. Lessons four and five offer a clear handout on formatting using Microsoft programmes in general. The sequence is based on the QCA unit but can be made more interesting if you do actually have the party at the end of the term. [Update, June 2007: None of the files is missing. I recapped a lot in this module because it was totally new to the class I taught this to.] Topics also included; bar graphs.

The bingo resources are Mr Barton's - thank you very much, they are superb. The plan recaps briefly median, mode and mean, spending more time on the mean, although any of the elements could be made shorter or longer as needed. The lesson itself was judged to be outstanding by the lead inspector.

Time worksheet

(9)
A simple table with four clocks showing different times. Underneath each clock children draw what they do at that time of the day. I used this after introducing the concept of o'clock, AM and PM. One of the AM clocks is deliberately blank so children - or their teacher - can choose a time to illustrate. We linked the work to history (Samuel Pepys' diary) and Geography (Barnaby Bear travel diary). This should be printed double-sided as one page refers to AM and the other to PM.

Counting in 2s

This worksheet consists of two pages, the latter being more challenging as it involves higher numbers. I enlarged the sheets to A3 and began the lesson with shopping role play where pupils had to buy oversized items from me using giant money. We counted out two pence pieces and children had to pretend that they had 2ps stuck to each of their fingers to introduce this new concept. Children worked in pairs and counted out 2ps until they had sufficient for each purchase. They then drew around the correct number in the space to the right-hand side of the item - this was the reason for having A3 sheets.
