(1)

Whole class guided reading for ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’. This is 4 weeks worth of planning. Each lesson contains 1 PowerPoint with several ‘we try’ questions for every page of the book (linked to VIPERS skills) to faciliate meaningful discussion around the text. This was taught in Year 3, however, it could also be used in a Year 4 class. Planning uses reading vipers and each week focuses on 1 reading viper.

Week 1 - Vocabulary
Week 2 - Retrieval
Week 3 - Inference
Week 4 - Inference

The whole text is covered within the 4 weeks with each lesson focussing on 1/2 chapters.

I am an English specialist and my teaching of Reading has been graded as ‘Outstanding’.

Each lesson’s structure is as follows:

I try - Teacher models reading aloud to children and answers questions.
Read the chapter page by page. This is read between partners and then we come back together for a discussion (we try) after each page.

Teacher models skill focus of the week.

Children independently complete skill comprehension questions on the last slide.

This took me hours worth of work so I hope it can help somebody else! Please leave me a review if you find it useful :)
