Introduce Cryptography with this set of activities,students will explore Morse Code, Caesar Cipher, Semaphore, PigPen Cipher and look at some history of Bletchley Park, they are challenged to solve problems to gain time in the final Cryptohunt where their understanding of number will be tested. This is an all day activity with all resources made, teacher notes included and designed to have minimum teacher input. Perfect for enrichment days or any off timetable days. Designed for KS3 and KS4 maths groups, differentiated so everyone can access something. Originally run with Year 10 on an enrichment day, with 150 students.

This can be used as a game or just an activity. Students must pick a card off a pile and carry out that transformation. As they get more confident start picking out 2 or 3 cards at a time and doing combined transformations. Can be trurned into a game by putting students into pairs or groups and seeing who can do as many different transformations or combinations within a given time.

Students are required to work out the surface area of different cubiods to determine how much paper would be required to cover all the eggs. They then need to work out how many rolls of paper need to be bought and the best deal to choose. Finally need to calculate a total cost. Extension activity is to give the students a budget.

I made this as an activity for year 10 students on an enterprise day 1-1.5hrs long Included is : A PowerPoint on the basics of Cryptography, a couple of short videos and solutions. A document with four different coded messages using Morse code, Pig Pen cipher, a number substitution cipher and Caesar Shift cipher. Fact sheets so students can look up how to decode each message. GCHQ extension puzzles with clues and answers. The puzzles are taken from the GCHQ puzzle book. Students were very engaged and seemed to enjoy having to figure out the method to decode themselves, from the fact sheets .
