This is a step-by-step calorimetry practical with step-by-step instructions on how to calculate the amount of energy transferred (q). I incorporated this into the alternative fuels section of the GCSE AQA syllabus but it could be done at any time. I print all four slides out on A3 paper for use with Year 10 pupils. This resource could also be adapted for AS/A level (maybe with some of the help deleted).

<p>I print off the structures of the first 5 hydrocarbons and put them in envelopes.<br /> I have piles of the questions at the front of the room in order (the first being the envelope of hydrocarbons). Pupils must complete the answer sheet by answering the questions/following the hints in a relay style fashion (pairs/ groups). I usually check pupils’ answers before they are allowed to take the next one. This is very much a sit at the front and do very little activity.</p>

<p>Starter - dot and cross diagrams<br /> Activity - I laminate slides 12-18 and put them around the room, pupils (in groups) are assigned a shape and make (using Molymods) a model of their assigned shape. Pupils move around the room completing sheets (24-25).<br /> Plenary - Using mini WB’s pupils determine the shapes of the compounds on the slides.</p>

This worksheet is designed for pupils to complete using a textbook (or as a plenary). I get pupils to suggest a structure for the inside of the fractionating column before showing them what it actually looks like (there is a box for them to copy this in). There is a box for them to enter the temperature the crude oil is heated to/ that vaporisation occurs.

Since the TV show Breaking Bad has been such a hit I designed this worksheet to link it with A2 synthesis and stereoisomerism (this worksheet has been amended)

These slides can be made into revision cards to help learn/ remember the different colours of transition metal compounds.

<p>Students design their own key and then colour code the functional groups present in each compound.<br /> Green molecules have one functional group, Orange molecules have two functional groups and Red molecules have many functional groups.<br /> This can be used for consolidation or revision.</p>

<p>Organising the reactions/ colours in this way highlights to students that there are not that many colours to learn.<br /> They can see the similarities and differences easily and it helps them understand the trends/patterns.<br /> I either ask students to complete this grid whilst carrying out the practical or to complete it for homework following the practical.</p>

<p>This can be completed as you mark a class set of assessments to highlight common misconceptions, errors in exam technique, common misspelled words etc. Instagram moments could be students who have written excellent answers that you might want to share with the class.<br /> DIRT can be written in and the sheet photocopied and stuck into all students books.<br /> Students can either choose which DIRT to do or be directed by their teacher.</p>
