Year 5 and 6 unit of work based on Room 13 by Robert Swindells.
Mystery and Suspense writing: shifts in tense, change in pace, character and setting description.
Lots of grammar work for the year 5 curriculum included in the plans: speech punctuation, relative clauses, modal verbs.
Differentiated resources included.

Full unit of work for Year 5 but could be adapted for Year 6.
Final outcome is for the children to write a quest story of their own.
It uses ideas from Alan Peat and Talk for Writing approaches but is independently written.
The unit takes 4 weeks and all the resources are included (except a powerpoint and wordmat that can be downloaded from Twinkl).
Resources include: Smart notebooks, starter activites, model texts to explore and mark and images.

Please let me know what you think.
Thanks.

A smart notebook to remind Year 5 children what a fraction is at a basic level and to explore how to use number lines to count on and back in fractions of a whole and then in mixed number steps.

NC coverage:

• use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups.
• To generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams.
• To select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks [for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing], accurately
• To select from and use a wider range of materials and components, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities.
• To evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work.

Good for Lower KS2.

Get to know your new class with these ‘all about me’ resources. You can use as many or as few as you like to create an attractive display at the start of the new year.

Each child completes an outside design and as many of the other pages as required. These are then cut out and folded in half lengthways. Glue each page back to back to create a book effect that can be made into a hanging display or a 3D wall-mounted display. I hung a basket with the child’s name on it below each balloon or you could hang a photo of each child.

The image isn’t one of mine, I just used that to give you an idea of how to fold the pages to create the 3D effect.

Lots of cutting out, but it looks great when finished.

Laminate and cut out these words to display in your classroom.

My children use them regularly in English lessons but will also refer to them in topic work too.

Good for lower KS2 to explain the process in planning for a narrative story.

Adventure stories / myths and legends / science fiction / historical fiction / etc

Use with a planning sheet (not included) to enable the children to plan their own stories.
