Vocabulary building challenges - 6 worksheets with 9 challenge words on each.

(1)
This resource is for higher ability pupils and is designed to help them build and strengthen their skills in using more adventurous vocabulary. Each worksheet has 9 ‘challenge’ words, which the students need to look up in dictionaries and complete the table by identifying which word class each word belongs to and writing out its definition. At the end of each sheet, the student is asked to choose one of the words as their favourite and write a sentence using the word. It is an excellent extension activity for students to move on to when they finish their classwork ahead of others, or can also be used as homework or for a whole class warm up exercise (whereby they work on just two or three words at the start of each lesson). Example words: tenacious, rudimentary, unwieldy, ratified, frenetic.

VOCABULARY WARM-UPS for KS1-2 or EAL

(0)
A fun set of five warm-up/starter activities to help build knowledge and understanding of 25 interesting words. This resource can be used as a quick starter activity, or stretched out to include dictionary work and discussion. Each set of 5 words is delivered using two slides. The first slide introduces the words so children can either say or write down definitions. The following slide has a short passage with the 5 words missing, so the class has to ‘fill in the blanks’ - one click on the powerpoint and the correct missing word appears, so no writing is necessary unless you want that! This is a great way to encourage children to use different words and to learn the meanings of new ones. Ideal for KS1-2 and/or EAL learners of English.

A team spelling quiz to use as a fun warm-up or plenary exercise for Lower Key Stage 2. Three words linked with Chinese New Year appear on each slide for teams to choose the correct spelling from. There are ten sets of words in total and answers are provided at the end. It is suggested that children work in small mixed ability groups to give each team an equal chance of winning! Each team should select a writer, to write down the answers (A, B or C) for each slide. Children should be encouraged to work as a team and listen to everyone’s answer before agreeing on which one to write down. Enjoy!

This resource includes two short proof-reading tasks to read through and amend mistakes with capital letters. It is a handy reminder to use capitals for proper nouns, to begin sentences and to start direct speech, and could be used as a 10 minute warm-up or as a homework exercise. It is suitable for Years 4-6 and can easily be shortened or amended for lower ability pupils or those who work at a slower pace. There is an optional extension task designed to challenge the more able at the end of each one, that asks the pupils to continue the story, paying particular atttention to capital letters and speech marks for direct speech.

Four easy to use proof-reading for tenses tasks

(0)
An easy to use set of Upper Key Stage 2 resources, aimed at providing valuable proof-reading practice. These four tasks focus on the consistent use of tenses and pupils simply need to read through each one and amend them in order to keep them consistently in present or past tense (there are two activities for each). This makes a handy warm up or extension exercise and amendments can either be made directly on the sheet for a quicker activity, or the passages may be amended and copied out into exercise books. This activity can also work well as a fun, timed competition… who can make the most changes in two minutes, for example. Each passage is written so that an additional activity could be to continue the piece of writing, or to add a final paragraph.

A-Z Vocabulary Challenge

(0)
This is a fun challenge aimed at extending vocabulary with a range of new and interesting words for learners to look up and try out at home. There is a set of twenty six brightly presented words, each starting with a different letter of the alphabet, and these include the following: diminish, infallible, penultimate and undulating. As vocabulary tends to need constant reinforcement, this task is suitable for anyone between the ages of 11 and 16 plus. An additional challenge for more able students is included, that involves writing sentences using two different words from the list. The task is perfect for a range of uses. For example, a family may decide to take one word per day to focus on understanding and using, or teachers could easily use the sheet as a generic task to challenge whole classes or year groups.
