Mini Unit of work based on the short story 'The Speckled Band'. Designed for a higher ability year 7 group but could be easily adapted to suit a range of needs at KS3.
Complete Unit of Work suitable for KS3. Originally designed to stretch able year 8 learners but easily adaptable for a range of abilities. Includes individual lessons and resources and a complete medium term plan as well as opportunities for assessment.
<p>The powerpoint serves as a thorough introduction to the novel and opening chapters. It contains key information concerning context and activitities concerned with the first five chapters of the novel. Some key topics covered are listed below:</p>
<p>Context - Edwardian expectations for men, masculinity and emotional repression, trauma theory / the ‘fact fiction’ of the novel - e.g. the real Sassoon and Rivers, shell-shock and common treatments of the time.</p>
<code>Characters - Focus on Sassoon and Rivers' initial interactions, first impressions of characters including Anderson, Prior, Burns, Rivers and Sassoon.

<p>Tasks are varied - questions on each chapter, links to themes, discussion based work etc.</p>
<p>This resource includes a powerpoint file and a word document. There is enough work here to cover 3 or 4 lessons, including reading time. There is an opening revision task encouraging students to reflect on the themes of shell-shock/mental illness in the early chapters. Following on from this there are some guided reading questions for chapter 6 and further tasks focusing on the relationships presented in these two chapters:</p>

<p>Powerpoint contains activitites based on chapters 14 - 17. There is a worksheet also included which encourages students to closely analyse a passage from chapter 14 about Rivers. Resource also contains disucussion / deeper thinking questions based on chapter 14 and suggested answers to further ideas and understanding. Also includes questions on chapter 15 (with a focus on the character Burns). Further tasks / activities for chapter 16/17.</p>

<p>Originally used to introduce Year 9 students (grammar school ability) to the novella but would be suitable as an introduction for Year 10 also.</p>
<p>Part 1 contains a full half-term (7 weeks) worth of lessons based on a timetable of 10 English lessons a fortnight. It covers context and chapter 1. In practice, there was enough work here to cover more than a half-term.</p>
