Pedigree Chart/Diagram activity

Ppt uploaded so teachers/tutors can move around the symbols or fill to indicate genetic disorder, then print. Also included Queen Victoria's pedigree (Haemophilia). Some opportunity to engage students with discussion (leading question about importance of including all family members - disorders are affected by environment too - assume all family members have equivalent lifestyle back in history). Also added less usual family relations to encourage HOT (Higher Order Thinking). Finally request student to think up his/her own chart to swap & test fellow classmates.

This is based on the template for the DNA replication card sort, provided by another contributor. I had to alter the colours so they didn't give away the order of the way the pieces fitted together. This image needs to be printed out, preferably laminated and cut into individual triangles the students have to fit together. Most find it fun. Answers in AS Biology Edexcel textbook.

AQA A level Psychology: Stress

Three fun puzzles (card sorting) to be done in pairs or groups. Based on Chapter 8 of Nelson Thorne textbook for AQA AS Psychology. I used all three for revision during the last 20-25 min of class (with textbook checking allowed) & found students wanted to finish as a priority over their lunch! Image capture with phones é iPads, then taking the puzzles home with them, added to their investment.

lipids, fats, proteins, carbohydrates and water. This activity takes longer than it seems with peer assessment and questions at the end. (approx. time = 30-45min). For smaller groups I have used this test in conjunction with a puzzle station and a DNA double helix folding exercise (Sanger) station. This helps alleviate congestion while still appealing to the kinesthetic, tactile learner.

A quick revision game - expect this to take 5-10 minutes with good students. Nice to have if the lesson finishes early. I ask students to image capture the finished card sort with their phones, then provide them with the cards to use in spare time for revision (when brain is tired of reading/memorising).
