A SoW that was written for Year 13 A Level Literature students. It has been written to teach for the Cambridge international A Level syllabus, but will also be adapted for teaching to the Edexcel syllabus next year. I have included all resources that are needed for teaching, however students may benefit from some of the quotes used being printed out too - this can be done straight from the Powerpoint. There are also links to be found in the slides - these point to resources found online. I have also included a link to a padlet and a popplet on slides 16 and 25. You may wish to replace the padlet link with your own, as this lesson was originally shared as a hyperdoc for students to complete independently. Equally the popplet link will enable you to access the quotes and see some of my student’s ideas, but again you may wish to recreate this if you see fit. I have also included a selection of critical essays to set as reading.

Powerpoint based on the poem ‘Hide and Seek’ by Vernon Scannell. Targeted to IGCSE Edexcel English Literature, but could easily be used for other poetry units. Model paragraphs for students are also included. Lots of group work and interactive tasks to try, which culminate in a example exam response on the theme of childhood in the poem.

Lessons based on Edexcel iGCSE English Literature - all exam information is taken from their specification. Working on building students confidence when dealing with unseen poetry. Uses the poems ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ by Wilfred Owen and ‘The Last Post’ by Carol Ann Duffy. Activities include analytical tasks and model PEE paragraphs.

This is a presentation designed to deliver a number of lessons on the final sections of the novel. It covers key elements such as foreshadowing, the cyclical structure, symapthy, dislike and violence. There are resources within the powerpoint to use with classes, such as a frame for writing an essay on sympathy and dislike. An exemplar essay is also included. A final assessment task on themes is included too. This was designed for use with Edexcel iGCSE English Literature, and uses mark schemes from this, but can easily be adapted for other exam boards.

A lesson on ‘Search for my Tongue’, poem studied as part of the iGCSE English Literature Edexcel anthology. Group work task included, as well as a sample exam question and mark scheme.

This is a unit of work designed to be used as part of the AS Level English Language course, introducing students to a variety of text types and how to write about them. Using Stranger Things as a topic, this is a scheme of work which deals with the importance of language, commentary writing, and how to lend credibility to a subject which leaves many sceptical. Five different texts are included for analysis, as well as a range of activities included in the powerpoint which can be used for immediate teaching. The scheme will take about four weeks to complete, depending on how quickly students grasp commentary writing skills. This was designed for use with the international Cambridge A Level 9093 English Language course, but could be adapted for use with other exam boards in mind.

Updated and improved: 90+ slides SoW using the premise that students have been sent to Alcatraz prison. This has been used for Year 7 and 8, depending on ability. Huge number of activities included, with full range of resources for improving writing whilst engaging with the central idea of being imprisoned during the 1920s-30s when gangs in America were notorious. Different writing styles covered including creative, informative and instructional. Complete with resources for assessment lesson, as well as skill based activities that can be differentiated.

This is a full scheme of work that is used as a Year 8 lesson sequence, but could equally be adapted to any KS3 class. This is a writing scheme which also contains a lot of media work, culminating in the creation of a documentary. It is probably the most popular project with my students over the course of key stage 3! This is a powerpoint on the poem ‘Blessing’, which is included in the Edexcel iGCSE anthology for English Literature. The lessons contain activities for students to engage with the poem, as well as working on writing a persuasive speech using rhetorical techniques.

A scheme of work designed to introduce students to the different types of texts studied during their iGCSE course. Based on the Edexcel specification, using assessment objectives from this, but easily adaptable. Gives a brief introduction to understanding texts, language analysis and the importance of context. A range of activities included, such as creating presentations, identifying techniques, researching background knowledge, and more.

Lessons on the poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling, which is included as part of the iGCSE Edexcel English Literature anthology. Includes links to some Youtube resources, including an incredible short film which is based on the poem. Some analysis also included.
