Originally designed for home learning, this unit contains four projects which could easily be used over a number of lessons over a period of weeks at school or at home. Geography skills and knowledge covered include: human and physical features climate and weather human impact on the environment Children will: -research and make notes on the Scottish Highlands -create a weather forecast for the Scottish Highlands -create a travel brochure for the Scottish Highlands -argue for or against building a shopping centre on the Isle of Coll This can be linked to an English unit on Katie Morag. There are also lots of opportunities for art links.

A music lesson designed for Year 1 that could also be used in Reception or Year 2 with very little adjustment. Curriculum links: Music, Science (plants). The song used is on Sing Up, however if you don’t have a subscription to this you can find it on youtube. Notes under each slide talk you through how to run the lesson. Only resources needed are a class set of basic percussion instruments.

A four lesson unit of work based around the book Princess Smartypants by Babette Cole. A read through of this book can be found on YouTube if you don’t have a physical copy. The outcome by the end of a unit is a character description. The unit can be used to introduce adjectives. Lesson 1 - Introduce the story. Discuss the title, cover, role of author/illustrator, etc. Make predictions throughout. Sequence the key events of the story as a class and then independently. Resources provided to record this in books. Challenge more able students to label their pictures with key words or sentences. Lesson 2 - Introduce adjectives. Use ‘role on the wall’ to build vocabulary to describe the main character - focus on appearance. Lesson 3 - Introduce adjectives. Use ‘role on the wall’ to build vocabulary to describe the main character - focus on personality. Lesson 4 - Use vocabulary built over the week to write a character description, focusing on choosing interesting adjectives to create expanded noun phrases. The book can also be used as a starting point for discussions around gender roles at a level Year 1 students can engage with.

Creating a soundscape using inspiration from Romans history topic. Students make sounds using body percussion, and from items found in the classroom, and begin to explore informal notation (symbols representing sounds). Could be easily adapted to any other topic. Could also be used for Year 4 topics with added discussion around texture and rhythm.

Music lesson designed for year for but easily adapted for any age group. Students explore making music through household objects, using Stomp! as inspiration. Students learn about rhythm, composition and performance. Can also include discussion about texture and dynamics for more able students. Students can also notate their pieces, using either informal or formal notation depending on ability. Could also link to materials topic by comparing sounds made by different objects (metal, plastic and wooden kitchen items).

Three or more weeks worth of literacy lessons based on The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler. Suitable for Year 1, developed for students with additional needs and students with English as an additional language. Includes story mapping, sequencing, retelling, character description, prepositional language, as well as related art and drama lessons.

Tudor inspired music lesson focusing on the musical element duration. Students learn about simple notation, composition and performance. Could easily be adapted to Year 6 British Monarchs topic. Lesson can be used with any instruments - we use xylophones because we happen to have enough in school.

A Science unit of work on everyday materials designed for Year 1 but easily adaptable for Year 2. Focuses on identify, sorting and comparing materials and includes two investigation lessons. Includes 6 lesson slides and differentiated resources.

A two week English unit of work based on Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. The focus of the unit is on retelling a narrative, including innovating, with a focus on describing the setting. Includes: an overview of the unit 7 lessons slides differentiated resources

This project has daily lessons to support children to create their own moving picture card over a week. Originally designed as a home learning project, this could be used at home or at school. Children will learn about slider and lever mechanisms, how to design a project, and given clear step-by-step instructions for making their moving picture card. This can be linked to any story you are currently learning in class, or children can choose their favourite story and character to recreate.

A week long unit on poetry for Year 1. Includes lessons on performance poetry adjectives hold a sentence writing a poem Also includes differentiated resources for retrieval questions.

Students write their own song lyrics to the tunes of well known nursery rhymes, inspired by what they have learned about British Monarchs. Students learn about composition, pitch and melody, duration and rhythm. The detail in which you discuss each of these can depend on the ability of the group. Can also use simplified versions of students’ favourite pop songs. Can be adapted to different age groups and different topics.
