A lesson that looks at the staging and transition between the emotional end to Act 2 and the courtroom atmosphere of Act 3. Lesson ends with a staging question.

Six practice papers for students who study ‘The Crucible’ and Live Theatre. There are no mark schemes along with these, just the question papers with extracts. Over the 6 they cover each of the acts in the play. These papers have cover sheets like the real paper to help with consistency, but they are NOT created or endorsed by the EDEXCEL exam board, simply what I use to help my students.

First lesson in ‘The Crucible’ Drama studies. Includes a basic background on Puritan social hieracrchy and a forum theatre game to understand the idea of ‘Witchhunts’ and how they spread.

Lesson 4 of SOW focus on initial entrance and conversation of Abigail Williams with Parris. Compares Abigail and Tituba for physicality, then moves into the introduction of main antagonist character. Ends with two sample questions from the exam, one for AQA and one for EDEXCEL. Both focus on Abigail and her character in this scene.

A walking mock based on the spec paper for EDEXCEL GCSE Drama. Focus is on The Crucible and Woman in Black for Live Theatre. Each question has a timed response, the mark scheme, and example responses.

A lesson on the character of Tituba, focusing on her initial entrance and conversation with Parris. For Drama GCSE The Crucible studies appropriate for AQA and EDEXCEL. Details Tituba’s actual history, use of the ‘slave’ character, and how to approach from a modern perspective.

A lesson on the return of the character of Hale. Students will play the interrogation of John by Hale and design a stage as homework. This lesson does not have a question associated with it.

A look at first how Hale has changed, trying to still be good in the midst of corruption, then at Elizabeth for her final scene where she is pregnant and dirty but still wants to do right by her husband. An exemplar if given for a question on acting as Hale, then students do their own for an Elizabeth question.

A lesson about the position Mary is placed in at the end of Act 2. Focus shifts to the use of props, including the poppet. A design question and the mark scheme end the lesson.

Second lesson in SOW for EDEXCEL and AQA. Lesson on McCarthyism and links to “The Crucible”. Still for pre-reading.

A lesson on the section from Act 1 when Betty stirs, including the entrance of Rebecca and Giles. Focus is on interaction and contrast of young and old characters. Lesson moves on to writing about sound and/or lighting with a sample beginning for a response on both. A narrated version of this lesson is included that was used in lockdown this year.

A lesson for the EDEXCEL GCSE Drama course on the entrance and initial impression of John Proctor. It looks at the initial entrance of him, other character reactions, the use of scenic moments in this play, and concludes with a 9 mark mock question. A narrated version of this lesson is also included which was used in lockdown this year.

A lesson on the entrance of Hale, focus on speech patterns, the idea of the outsider linked with Tituba, and ends with the idea of staging the end moments of Act 1.

Lesson 6 of the SOW for GCSE Drama ‘The Crucible’ this resource has a practice question for both EDEXCEL and AQA. Bonus narrated version of the PPT given used during lockdown last year as well as the standard powerpoint resource.

A lesson on the power dynamics of the girls in The Crucible. A narrated version is also included which was used for lockdown this year. The lesson focuses on pacing, movement and characterisation as well as some context. A practice directing question is included for EDEXCEL GCSE.

This is the first lesson of Act 2 and introduces the character of Elizabeth, the loyal wife. Students will consider Miller’s commentary on her, contrast her to Abigail, and complete a 6 mark acting question based on the EDEXCEL GCSE written Drama exam. There is also an exemplar answer included. A remote version of the lesson is included with narration that was used in lockdown this year.

A lesson introducing Cheever and Herrick. The quick transitions and building tension at the end of Act 2 is looked at, as well as Mary’s diminished power for her second entrance of the Act. A design based question is at the end for props/stage furniture.

Students will perform monologues from the perspective of one of the characters at the end of Act 3, peer assessing according to EDEXCEL guidelines. Then move on to opening set design for Act 4.

A forum theatre lesson looking at Abigail’s accusations and lies in Act 3. Audience interactive and works as a class to act out the scene.

A lesson looking at the change seen in Hal from Act 1,2,3. Then goes into the accusation of Mary with a class activity using key gestures to intimidate and show the power of mob mentality. Interactive audience theatre.

Students look at the change in Parris from Act 1 to now, his lack of confidence, and betrayal by the girls. Students are given a practice question with success criteria and an exemplar start to the answer. They will then self assess according to the exam board criteria.
