This lesson has been designed to help build and develop pupils’ retrieval skills. Included is an excerpt of Holes (copyright to author Louis Sachar), Chapters One and Two. The length of the excerpt is similar to that of a KS2 SATs reading text. Retrieval questions based on the excerpt have also been included. As well as this, there is a PPT which gives some important reading tips to help students understand how to answer retrieval based questions.

The length of the excerpt is similar to that of a KS2 SATs reading text. Retrieval questions based on the excerpt have also been included as well as an extension activity. Also included is a PPT which explains some different types of retrieval questions that may appear in a KS2 SATs reading paper (the question types included are different to that explained in Lesson 1). The PPT also gives some important reading tips to help students understand how to answer retrieval based questions.

An investigation based on the germination process aimed at Year 5 students. This lesson is focused on developing children’s scientific enquiry skills and to allow them to work and think scientifically by planning an investigation on the conditions needed for germination to take place. This lesson also includes a lower ability (LA) planning worksheet and a middle ability planning worksheet. The LA worksheet has been designed to reduce the barrier of writing. Children using this sheet can draw images in the spaces provided if needed.

This long-term writing curriculum map gives teachers in each year group a breakdown of what genre to teach in every half-term. Alongside each writing genre, is a link to a book/ media to base the writing on. Each book has been chosen specifically to suit the age range of that year group. Some writing genres are also cross-curricular linked with subjects such as science and history.

This resource is designed to help the development of children’s reading skills. The reading bookmarks provide support to parents/ carers/ school volunteers by providing a list of useful question stems to ask children when they are reading. Question stems have been split under the key reading skills: Vocabulary, Retrieval, Inference, Explanation and Summary.
