Language Devices Sheet

(1)
This sheet lists some of the most common language devices which students need to be able to pick out. For each language device there is a definition, an explanation of why it is used and at least one example. This can be printed and stuck in students' exercise books to help them become more independent when analysing a text.

Paragraph Writing Scaffold

I've used this scaffold with both low-ability SEN students and top set GCSE students who struggle with structure. Based around PEEKLE paragraphing (a more developed version of PEE paragraphing), it provides a framework for students to create well-developed paragraphs that include focus on a key word, the language used and the effect on the reader. It's a starting block for fantastic analytical writing by students.

Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation Scaffold

This sheet will help students break away from their comfort zone with vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation. It can be used with lower-ability secondary students or primary pupils. I have included the PDF version and a Word version so that once it is downloaded you can adapt the Word version to whatever your students are writing about.

This is a resource I've developed over the last couple of years and it works brilliantly! It can be used/adapted for any subject. You simply put the PowerPoint slide on the board and quickly talk students through what they need to do. This cuts down on your marking time drastically as students are providing themselves and one another with quality feedback.
