Pupils are assigned one character during The Troubles and complete a table with key information. They use it to write a speech which they will read to other members of their group, who can use the speech to complete their table. Can be adapted for Key Stage 3 classes.

Use images sheet to work out 'the story&' of why Germany and the USSR signed the non-aggression pact. Pupils should try to work out what they images are trying to show. Works best immediately after the class has studied Munich/Appeasement. This is followed by some teacher-talk on what happened after the signing of the treaty, and then a source exercise. As an extension task you could add a GCSE style question - 'Explain why Germany and the USSR signed the non-aggression pact.'

Display 4 main causes of German defeat around different parts of the room, and split the class into groups. They will fill in the grids based on the information you have displayed. Alternative: Split the class into groups of 4 and let each one independently fill out the grids. Then pupils evaluate the reasons, deciding which is most important.
