As a more mature and experienced teacher and parent, with almost two decades of teaching and learning both in the UK and International schools, I am able to bring a broad range of valuable assets to a school. The importance of creativity, patience, empathy, honesty, integrity, compassion and commitment, a need for versatility and flexibility, strong communication skills, and a sense of humour. A continuing thirst for knowledge and a delight and curiosity at what my students might bring to their work is a ‘given’. I have developed an ability to adapt to a range of ever-changing circumstances and surroundings and have a joy of collaboration with both students and my colleagues. Teaching in IB schools in both South-East Asia and South America over the last five years, my experience extends to both boarding and non-boarding school environments. I have taught across a wide range of age groups and key stages, curricula and contexts, these include IBDP, MYP, IGCSE, A level, Edexcel, the Canadian Alberta programs and the British National Diploma foundation studies in art and design. Previous to my career in teaching, I worked in the design industry for more than ten years. This has allowed me to gain insight into how the creative design process is used in the context of solving real life problems, which I have often adapted to projects in the classroom. My high expectations for my students’ work is reflected in their achievements. Last summer 80% of my students in Macau achieved level six in their IB visual arts diploma and in my previous school in Korea all of my IB visual arts group gained grades at level six or seven. In my IGCSE class of twenty students,100% gained A*s with one of these - Lena Kim gaining the ‘Top of the World’ award with the International Cambridge exam board for her work. My extensive travels to over forty-five countries are a greater part of what supports my teaching approach and I believe that an awareness of global issues and events is an essential part of education for all. This is a part of what has helped me bring my students experience to life in the classroom. Developing my own professional expertise and knowledge is an essential part of who I am as an educator. I am not afraid of a challenge, I am passionate and energetic, but I also continuously strive to be reflective in order to ensure that my lessons are relevant, engaging and stimulating in this ever-changing world. Taking part in voluntary community projects, professional workshops and visiting exhibitions is very important to me on both a personal and professional basis, as well as enabling me to see what is at the cutting edge of curatorial practice, scholarship and exchange.
