This lesson concerns the growth of Lagos, and specifically gets students thinking about the causes and impacts of urban growth. The main activity for the lesson is the construction of a futures wheel which gets students to think about the question “What happens when Lagos grows?”.

Resource is based on the AQA Geography specification, looking at Shanty Towns in the city of Lagos, Nigeria. Specifically, the resource focuses on the redevelopment of the Makoko shanty town in Lagos, based around Quality of Life concerns and the ever-increasing development of the city. Resource pack includes: powerpoint presentation with external video links associated resources (differentiated resources).

This powerpoint can be used with classes as a way to introduce the continent of Africa. It was specifically made for year 7 pupils as their first introduction to Africa. The aim of the lesson was to challenge pupil preconceptions of Africa based on stereotypes they may have in their prior knowledge (e.g. “Africa is disease ridden”, “All of Africa is Poor” etc).
