Assembly on stalking and what to do about it

This school assembly consists of a powerpoint with accompanying walk-through notes explains what stalking is and why it is so dangerous. The assembly links to the impactive video about Alice Ruggles who was stalked and then murdered by an ex-partner, but there is an option to replace this with an animated video which is less hard-hitting. By the end of the assembly students should be able to recognise what stalking is and understand it should be taken seriously, know where to go for support or information if they think they are being stalked and know how to help a friend or family member who they think may be at risk .

We’ve also included a handout/poster of sources of help for victims

The assembly complements the Alice Ruggles Trust’s existing PSHE Association-Accredited Relationship Safety Resource and can be delivered in person or online, by school staff or volunteers from the Alice Ruggles Trust. Unfollow me - Why stalking is so dangerous

Controlling behaviour in a relationship and stalking when it is over are two behaviours that can be seriously distressing and dangerous. This impactive video produced by Broadly gives compelling evidence of what happens if they are ignored. It features the family of Alice Ruggles talking about her ex-boyfriend who would not go away. He stalked Alice relentlessly and then murdered her when she would not make up with him.

Your Ex won't go away - Is it stalking?

Pupils need advice on healthy relationships, but they also need advice on how to get out of unhealthy ones and what to do if their ex-partner will not stop pursuing them. This is stalking and is an enormous problem.
This animated video features two friends discussing the behaviour of an ex-partner. This is correctly recognised as stalking, safety advice is given, and the victim is supported in making a police report. The aim of the video is to raise awareness of seemingly ‘low risk’ behaviours and encourage pupils to seek help.
The video is a good starting point for discussion and can be used in conjunction with our lessons on preventing stalking and coercive behaviour. We hope that it will help victims recognise stalking for what it is and that it will help friends and family to support them and give good advice.
