The effects of climate change Case Study: Tuvalu full lesson.

(0)
A lesson I created for a teaching interview (I got the job!). The lesson explores how climate change is affecting the small islands of Tuvalu. The lesson contains: a hook starter task to draw students into the topic with a short video around how the government in Tuvalu is trying to raise awareness. Quick tasks including some simple locational map skills, match the word to the picture task for the effect of climate change. A main task that gets students considering the social, environmental and economic impacts. A think pair share task to summarise what they have learnt. A quick ending task that gets students thinking about potential solutions, plus images of solutions already being used in the area. This is a really lovely lesson that gets kids thinking outside of the box, and thinking Geographically in all areas. Designed as a one hour lesson but could easily stretch over 2 if needed. Note: the template needed for the main task can simply be printed from slide 10. This could be an individual task , pair, or group task,

Coastal management decision making activity

(0)
A decision making activity that gets Y9, Y10 and Y11 students applying their knowledge of coasts, coastal management strategies , economic, social and environmental advantages and disadvantages to a made-up holiday park scenario on a fast eroding coastline! Can last 40 mins -1 hour ( could ask student to present their ideas to a stakeholder or create a presentation based on the resource?) Welcome to ‘Bogus Beach’ Holiday park! "Bogus Beach is a popular holiday park for UK tourists. It has a number of different food venues, entertainment venues, theme parks, swimming pools and accommodation for all budgets. People enjoy the easy access to the beach, green sand dunes and friendly atmosphere. Bogus Beach is popular with families with children and the elderly, and is a thriving private business with a £10 million net worth. Bogus beach is being eroded quickly by the sea due to the narrow beach and strong destructive waves from the North Sea. It is predicted to start affecting the site in around 5-6 years. " This decision making resource based on a made-up holiday park on the N.E coastline challenges student to apply knowledge of hard and soft engineering strategies to a real life style scenario. Students must analyse the costs, customer satisfaction , life span and effectiveness of : Groynes, gabions, rock armour, beach nourishment , dune stabalisation and sea walls. They must consider the advantages and disadvantages, plot the plans on a photograph, and put together a proposal to put forward to the holiday park manager. Skills: Maths cost analysis application of engineering strategies to real photograph considering economic, environmental and social advantages and disadvantages of each type. Fully adaptable ( but you probably won’t need to!)
