This is a fantastic 2 week Reading & Writing unit (10 days and 2 bonus lessons) linked to Armin Greder’s amazing book ‘The Island’ - a rich text full of wonderful themes to explore:
bullying
exclusion
racism
refugee
human rights and
xenophobia (dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries).
It includes all documents, support files, a 105 page PowerPoint, individual lesson planning and sample texts written to inspire children.
Lesson outline:
1: What is an island (understanding and description)?
2: What is the author’s message?
3: What clues can you find in the text to infer meaning?
4: How can you recognise adverbs, including those for time, place and manner?
5: What is the newcomer feeling - what is his experience?
6: To write an informal letter the correct format responding to key events in the text.
7: To write a formal letter in the correct format responding to key events in the narrative.
8: What would the local newspaper report?
9: How can I write an alternative ending to the story?
10: What happened when the stranger left the island on his raft?
Bonus 2 lessons:
11: Write an alternative version to a selected part of the story.
12: Write a character description.
