AQA A Level Literature The Help All Chapters SOW

These are all the lessons that I used to teach The Help by Kathryn Stockett. We teach AQA A Level ‘Modern Times’. Some of these resources include practise paragraphs for students and how to respond to exam questions using the assessment objectives AO1-AO5

The introductory lesson outlines the context, there is a sheet and brief information if you want to use it or students can research it themselves.

You can choose to leave the ‘Introductory group lesson’ out if you would prefer. I got students to look at themes and produce presentations from Chapters 1-10 but if you would prefer to leave it out then there is a lesson by lesson approach for every chapter. Please leave feedback so I can make the resources as useful as possible :)

Hope it’s useful!

Sylvia Plath Ariel Modern Times Booklet

A handy booklet to help students with their study of a few poems from Sylvia Plath’s collection. I use this to compare to the novel ‘The Help’. Inside the booklet are essays and critical approaches for as many of the poems as I could find, useful websites and questions for the following poems:

Daddy
Tulips
Morning Song
Cut
The Applicant
Lady Lazarus
The Munich Mannequins
Berck-Plage
Nick and the Candlestick
Ariel
Kindness
The Arrival of the Bee Box
Medusa

There are also example exam questions for the AQA Modern Times paper with some model paragraphs that students might choose to build upon.
I will add more and update the resource as I go. Any feedback fully appreciated and I will tweak as required. This has taken hours of input so let me know if I can change anything :)

An introduction aimed at Year 9 students (high ability) to Shakespeare. I was asked to write a scheme of work to avoid the gap we had between students studying Shakespeare in Year 8 and then never again until Year 11. This unit encompasses extracts from: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing and the Merchant of Venice. The final assessment is based on an extract from Titus and Andronicus. The question is also based on Question Four of Paper One of the English Language GCSE (AQA). There is a mix of questions aimed also at Question Five of Paper Two AQA GCSE and the Literature exam. I haven’t put the introductory lesson on here as I actually adapted it from someone else’s resource on the TES. Please contact if you would like a link to that resource. Have fun!
