AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1 booklet guide

(0)
A 15-page A4 booklet that guides students through the five questions of the current (2017-18) AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1, for use with a KS4 class. It uses the Daphne Du Maurier AQA specimen paper as a guide with screenshots of what the questions and extracts look like, advice on how to respond to them and relevant tasks for the students to complete. I have used this with my Year 10 and 11 classes for the past two years and they find it clear and helpful. They also use it as a revision aid in the run up to their exams. It typically takes 5-7 lessons to get it through it all, depending on the ability of the group, and it acts as a self-contained mini unit of work that does not require any additional Powerpoints or worksheets. I have shared the resource with my colleagues and it now forms part of our KS4 programme of study.

I hope you find it useful!

KS3 Travel Writing 9 lesson unit - Introducing writing skills for GCSE AQA Language Paper 2

The Holiday Project!

This self-contained KS3 unit is designed to introduce students to the skills they will need to demonstrate for the writing section of the current AQA GCSE English Language Paper 2 (Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives). Over the course of around 9 lessons, students study and analyse different travel brochures and websites, analysing their authors’ use of language and presentational choices. Ultimately, students take what they have learnt from studying real-life brochures and use this to write and design their own brochure page, based on a location of their choice. The focus is on teaching students how to describe in order to persuade a target audience.

I have used this unit at the start of the summer term with my own year 8 classes for a couple of years now and they always find it engaging. As a teacher, I find that it prepares students well for their end of year exam which is modelled on Language Paper 2 as they learn to write persuasively with a particular viewpoint and perspective in mind. My colleagues in the English department also use the unit with good results.

The package includes:

A Word document overview of the unit with lesson goals summarised.

9 complete and attractive PowerPoints with entry and plenary activities. Each episode in the lesson is clearly described and builds logically on the learning from the previous lesson.

Several worksheets, clearly-labelled and easy to follow, which link with each of the 9 lessons.

I hope you find the unit useful. I will be teaching it again myself after Easter.
