Paper Chromatography - Particle Diagrams

(8)
Resource produced to visually illustrate how a mixture is separated into pure substances during chromatography. Designed initially for a low ability year 9 group (2017 Edexcel GCSE Combined Science).

Students use different colours to show particles present in ink and dies involved in chromatography; then identify mixture / pure substances and calculate Rf values.

Ion Tests - Challenge your partner

(0)
Designed for Edexcel GCSE Chemistry. Used for higher level groups.

Students think up an ionic compound (eg. NaCl) and make a note in their books or on scrap paper, hence the numbers. They then fill in boxes with the correct ion test results and swap sheets with their partner.

The partner then has to use the results of the ion tests to deduce the ions present and write the formula for the compound.

The ADDITIONAL sheet is for cation flame tests, sulphate, carbonate and chloride anion tests. It has a little more scaffolding to assist those who might not be confident writing ionic formulae.

The EXTENSION sheet is for flame tests, hydroxide precipitate tests for other cations, sulphate, carbonate and halide tests.
