This is an introductory unit that aims to encourage pupils to start using the key concepts and global issues as a way of interpreting texts. It is a stand alone unit that is aimed at engaging pupils and introducing them to the course. This unit lasts between 2-3 weeks and uses a 1970s advert and Childish Gambino’s This is America Music Video as stimulus materials. Pupils will develop their analysis skills and also consider how meaning is constructed in different mediums. There are two assessments that are covered: a presentation and a written essay. I have also attached the cards that I use in lesson - I laminated the global issue, key concepts, AoE and AoE questions prompts so pupils can make reference to them throughout the lesson.

This lesson includes group discussion and analysis of the beginning of the novel and activities which introduce the skills needed to analyse language and structure. This lesson also covers analytical writing (PEEAL) and the lessons themselves span roughly 3-4 lessons.

Several lessons that act as an introduction to the study of ‘A Doll’s House’ by Henrik Ibsen. The lessons cover: context, issues surrounding translation and how to interpret the title. This selection of lessons was taught as part of the IBDP English A: Language and Literature course but could easily be adapted.

This resource was planned as an introduction to Paper 1 of the new 2021 syllabus. This could take between 2-3 lessons depending on how much scaffolding your class needs. The two texts used are an article from the New Yorker and a cartoon strip; both are responses to the idea of Toxic Masculinity. The lessons guide students through the process of responding to a non-literary text and then writing up an exam style response.

This is a narrative writing lesson for the IGCSE Language Paper 2 (0500). However it is based on the novel ‘A Separate Peace’ to ensure cross curricular teaching during Y10 and Y11. The skills tested are writing skills, but the IGCSE novel has been used as a stimulus. This is part of the teaching of a full scheme of work for ‘A Separate Peace’ and the skills for the Language paper have been embedded within this unit. This could cover 2-3 lessons depeniding on the amount of time given for planning and the writing up of the essay.
