This is a unit of work for a mixed ability Year 11 class, using poetry written by African Americans and the historical context of their plight for equality. The resource includes:
Power-point 113 slides
Booklet to accompany the power-point
Model exemplars
Group/paired tasks
Scaffold for the assessment (sentence starters)
Suggested poems for assessment
Video links to explore context

This unit was successful. Through the class tasks, students learned how to pull techniques from the poems (I used the same 5-6 techniques for each poem) and link their usage to the context. It took around 6-7 weeks to prepare them for the assessment and the resource should cover this time period.
