Students practice differentiating between surface area and volume. After cutting out the cards, students sort the phrases and formulas into categories, and define surface area and volume in their own words.
This resources is a card sort to introduce the CCSS Mathematical Practices 1, 3, and 4 (Understanding problems and persevering in solving them, constructing viable arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others, and modeling with mathematics). Students solve the simple word problem, then sort the examples of student work into each category. Students may use the "mp_bookmarks" file as a resource. The rubric is an example of how student work on math tasks will be evaluated.
