These five tests are a brilliant revision tool for the Punctuation and Grammar component of the Key Stage 2 SPaG test in May. You can use these tests to assess your Year 6 pupils’ understanding of all the concepts in the new curriculum for SPaG. The ‘Parallel Test’ contains the same question types, in the same order, as the 2016 SPaG paper. It is exactly the same difficulty level as the original test. Papers 1 to 4 contain questions on the whole range of topics that might come up in the exam. (I’ve also included a few questions on topics such as ‘the infinitive’ and ‘impersonal language’. I think it’s unlikely that they will come up, but it only takes a few moments to explain them, and these were areas on which the children were assessed in previous years.) These tests are slightly more challenging than the short answers paper your children will sit in May.

SPaG Worksheets Unbeatable value! A brilliant resource of 34 explanations, exercises and worksheets to help your Year 6 students prepare and revise for the May Key Stage 2 SPaG tests. They are divided into the following sections. Word Classes and Grammatical Terms Functions of Sentences Combining Words, Phrases and Clauses Verbs Forms, Tense and Consistency Punctuation Vocabulary Standard English and Formality The ‘Golden Rules’ SPaG worksheets have been devised to help prepare children for the Grammar and Punctuation requirements of the 2014 curriculum. Each worksheet begins with a ‘Golden Rules’ section which explains the grammatical principles or punctuation conventions of the topic. The explanation is clear and comprehensive, and all the terminology is up to date. In some units there is an ‘extension information’ section which provides interesting detail beyond the requirements of the curriculum. This is aimed at those children who would benefit from further challenge. If the worksheets are being sent home for homework, the explanation sections will be of interest to parents and carers who are supporting their children with their work. The Question Types The practice questions are based on questions which have appeared in all of the SPaG tests, and specimen SPaG papers, since their introduction in 2013. All the questions are original, and, for certain topics, additional question types have been included. The extensive range of questions provides pupils with practice in the variety of different tasks which they might be required to complete in the exam. Using The Worksheets The worksheets are ideal for use in grammar sessions in class, as early work, in boosters and for homework. They are also great for revision as they contain all of the grammatical explanation and punctuation ‘rules’ for each topic, as well as the familiarisation questions. Answers All of the answers are provided.

Our grammar quizzes are ideal for use as starters or during the plenary to help your Year 6 students revise for the forthcoming SPaG papers. Each test contains 20 questions on a range of topics and spelling patterns likely to come up. Divide your class in two and turn it into a competitive activity, or challenge the children to beat their previous individual record. Read the questions out to the class, writing key vocabulary on the board. The children then fill in the answer on a special answer sheet which looks a bit like an old mental maths answer sheet! This is a brilliant way to revise lots of concepts in a matter of minutes!

** ‘The October Adventure’ and Accompanying Resources** Super Spies 1 – The October Adventure is a detective/spy story, composed of twelve short chapters, that is suitable for children reading purple band books and above. The vocabulary can be read with motivating fluency and comprehension. The October Adventure is about four siblings called Spring, Darcy, Tom and Joel Friend, who are invited to become spies/detectives for a mysterious Agency. The Friends live in a small, non-specific town. Their first mission is to recover a stolen quad bike. Readers will love the idea of being part of a gang of children solving mysteries. In the book there are several sections where Darcy uses the equipment in her spy kit. Kids enjoy reading about spying devices and, through her success in using her kit, Darcy gains confidence and becomes an accomplished agent. She will provide inspiration to all those children out there who are a little lacking in confidence! The characters in The October Adventure come from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds to reflect the readers’ world. Elements of the story are very familiar to children – homework, the park, the supermarket. (Essentially the book is realistic, although, at times, improbable!) But they are combined in such a way that they encourage children to believe that they themselves could also be caught up in their own exciting adventure. Accompanying Resources The October Adventure is an ideal resource for use in weekly intervention sessions. After reading a chapter with a group, you can explain and discuss the accompanying grammar exercise. Each chapter is followed by a short set of questions on one of the topics in the Key Stage 1 SPaG test. The questions are related to the contents of the chapter.
