KS3 Norman Conquest of England 1066 SOW

In this enquiry the students will develop an understanding of the Norman conquest of 1066. Some may build on prior KS2 knowledge of the Anglo Saxon era and why the Norman conquest is so significant to British history. They will investigate key concepts and terminology around what makes a good king and decide whether William deserved to be king or not. Lessons will look at how William established control in England after experiencing various rebellions from Anglo-Saxons. Methods of control include: use of land, violence, social and economic structures. They will analyse sources to understand that there are different interpretations of individuals and key events in history. This is a depth study where students will gain a deep understanding of the impact of the Norman invasion through the study of different case studies. This includes factors which enabled Norman success: military tactics during the different battles, luck, leadership. A focus on different methods of control; Castles: Motte and Bailey, Stonekeep and Concentric castles. This will also include the Harrying of the North where students are introduced to the concepts around violence and genocide in history and social and economic structures such as the Feudal and Domesday book. Content is presented chronologically in sections as is most appropriate to the period of study. The end of term assessment will have a selection of pop quiz questions - all of which are multiple choice, followed by an extended writing response where students will draw in their knowledge from the entire SoW. Students should be able to make links and comparisons between the aspects of the period studied. In this way links and contrasts will be rooted in secure knowledge and understanding.
