This is a complete lesson on the opening to Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. It looks at narrative hooks and literary devices such as personification. This could be used as a stand alone lesson for reading and analysis skills, or as part of a Gothic SOW.

A 'takeaway homework' document is also attached with ideas for homework for every week of the scheme. <br /> <br /> I originally wrote this scheme of work for Y9 however, I believe as some of the extracts are challenging, this could also be used for GCSE students.

The Hobbit chapters 4&amp;5. This is a complete lesson focusing on analysis of literary devices (such as sibilance and anastrophe) and language in chapters 4 &amp; 5 It requires looking at extracts including the first appearance of the Goblins and Gollum. <br /> This lesson can be used as a one off reading skills lesson, or as part of a complete Hobbit SOW. It is aimed at high ability pupils, but includes modeling and writing frames for lower ability pupils. It encourages pupils to consider the effect of devices on the reader and what the authors intention might be. The paragraph writing frame's used are PETER which hits all the descriptors of the new AQA specification for reading analysis.

This is a complete lesson and can be used as a stand alone lesson for teaching deduction and inference skills, or as part of a SOW for teaching Sherlock Holmes. I have pitched it at a high ability Y9 group, however it could be easily differentiated to work well for any year group. The lesson looks at the opening where Holmes and Watson meet for the first time and asks, what do we learn about Holmes' character from the way the author describes him? Students will learn what deduction and inference is and practice these skills using the extract.

Gulliver's Travels complete lesson: Adventure Fiction KS3 <br /> This could be used as a one off extract lesson for reading and writing skills, as part of an Adventure SOW or when reading the novel. <br /> <br /> The lesson looks at two key extracts: Gulliver arrives in Lilliput and Gulliver's pockets. The ppt accompanies the pdf's and includes all the same tasks.

The Coral Island complete lesson KS3 adventure fiction <br /> This is a complete lesson which can be used when studying the novel The Coral Island, as a one of reading skills lesson (assessment lesson) or as part of an adventure fiction SOW. <br /> <br /> Pupils will work with a short extract to answer the question: How is the theme of Adventure presented in the Coral Island? Pupils can complete a table of their inferences and deductions to help them write PETER paragraphs about the extract.

War of the Worlds The Cylinder Opens complete lesson of reading and writing skills for KS3 students. This lesson can be used as a one off or as part of an adventure/ science fiction SOW.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Chp 3 lesson on Cathy's ghost and analysis of Lockwood's character. <br /> This is a complete lesson that can be used as a one off reading skills lesson on deduction and inference or as part of a SOW when studying the novel. It includes a table, where pupils can complete their inferences, add evidence, analyse language and build a PETER paragraph.
