Vocabulary building through Word of the Day. I’ve found this method to be a hugely useful way of settling a class, and of building up an impressive arsenal of vocabulary. Monthly competitions for ‘Word of the Day’ stories (10 lines long, containing at least 10 words) have been popular, as have credit/merit awards for sharing instances of these words being used in novels/texts the students might have read. These can easily be printed as posters for the classroom. I’ve also found that class-specific examples help the words bed in.
