Fraction,Decimal, Percentage Mosaic

(3)
Creation of a coloured pattern or picture on a ten by ten grid builds student confidence in conversion between Fraction, Decimal, and Percentage, it also allows for student choice in the level of difficulty by extension to simplifying fractions and using half squares to contribute 1/200, 0.005, 0.5%. This has worked really well for me with lower ability year 7, who then displayed this work in the classroom.
Two grids on an A4 sheet to reduce copy cost.

Multiples of 6 and 7

(1)

Extending multiplication tables to 25 x 6 and 21 x 7 produces enough values to form the picture “42”. Students should recognize this as being the lowest common multiple of 6 and 7. A page of 6 number grids 1-150 is included which may be helpful to less able students.

First & Second Index Laws Worksheets

(1)

These two worksheets have 20 questions each,
The first 3 questions on each must be completed in full for best results,
Students may need to be reminded not to take a short cut at this early point.
I have used them very successfully many times.
They appeal to the competitiveness of students through the setting of time limits for completion of sections, then marking and asking “who had only 2 errors? 1 error? All CORRECT?” expect an excited class as they all work hard and achieve excellent results.
An Introduction display is included.

Finding Factors

(1)
Identifying factors is often given little space in text books, this worksheet provides the correct number of spaces to be completed for calculation and finding all factors, so clearly indicates to students the amount of work needed. Initially it shows 1 as a factor so that this is not forgotten.
The amount of space provided is reduced for questions 5-8, at which point students are ready to move to more mental calculation.
The spiral design created also prompts students to check their work for errors or missing values.
An introduction and example is provide for smartboard display.

These two worksheets can be completed in any order.
They are the first in a series covering all Index Laws, but can be used alone.

Vector Investigation

(1)

This assignment developed from my intention to write some original questions for my Geometry and Trigonometry students, I found that the decisions process was much more instructive than the resulting questions. Hence I chose to set this task requiring the students to create a storyline themselves using Position and Velocity vectors.
It also addresses literacy across the curriculum requirements.

Index Notation PowerPoint[

(1)

This PowerPoint is much more than a single lesson of work, or could be used for revision.
It covers -The meaning of an index number,
Finding the value of numbers in index form,
Multiplication of numbers with the same base,
Division of numbers with the same base,
Meaning of the Zero index,
Meaning of Negative indices,
Finding values of numbers with Negative or Zero indices,
Multiplication and Division of numbers with the same base including negative indices,
Square and Cube roots as fractional indices.
There are 7 tables of questions to answer either verbally as a class or they are included here as worksheets, answers appear on the PowerPoint.

Multiple Patterns to Prime Numbers

(1)
This worksheet gives a written version of locating prime numbers, which many teachers have traditionally introduced verbally. I find that errors are reduced by following the patterns produced and this also encourages quicker completion. A completed version is included for marking via smart-board.

Shopping Bags Assignment

(1)
This assignment asks students to investigate the difference in cost between buying and making a shopping bag (or several).
Clear written communication of the mathematics involved in this or similar real life problems was the incentive for its creation.
The 8 questions can be reduced or amended to meet your needs.
Student research can be replaced by the 3 sets of example measurements provided.

Function and Sequence

(1)

This worksheet has ten different linear functions and two using N squared, the terms to be calculated are initially in sequence, then it is made evident that some N values are absent, before expecting students to jump terms without prompting.
This work has proved itself to be very easy to mark and also to locate any errors that students might make.

Powers of 2 Homework

(1)

A real life application of the powers of 2, discovering the number of direct ancestors through the generations, that each of us must have.
Students will need to ask family about previous generations, hence parents will know that homework is being issued, and attempted. Most students will find that the birth names of all 8 great grandparents are not remembered; however the page notes that this is normal.

From Shapes to Equations Quadrant 1

These two worksheets can be printed or simply displayed for students to work on paper, and they capture attention much better than text style line graphs.
1. Construction of a quadrilateral from vertices coordinates then finding the equations and their range for its sides.
2. For a given heptagon student’s state coordinates of vertices, the equations and range of its sides.
This activity is easily extended by asking students to create their own shape and treat this in a similar manner. (Further sheets will work from equations to shapes)

Created for a “no pen day” this jigsaw can be put together with any of the three lines at the top.
18 calculations range from counting cubes, through applying formula, to calculating in parts.
The second page shows that answers for shapes in the bottom line are at the top of the page (this needs to be explained to students).

Sets of Numbers

For this consolidation worksheet students produce lists of
- First 18 multiples of 7
- First 20 Triangular Numbers
- First 20 Square Numbers
- First 12 Cube Numbers
- Prime Numbers below 100
Each guided by their first elements and correct amount of spaces
Locating these values in the grid produces the Paw Print picture. As the picture nears completion its symmetry will prompt students to correct any errors or omissions.

These two worksheets can be printed or simply displayed for students to work on paper, and they capture attention much better than text style line graphs.
1. Construction of a Triangle from given equations then finding the coordinates of vertices and range for drawing only its sides.
2. Construct an “L shaped” hexagon by solving simultaneous equations to locate vertices. State the full coordinates of each vertex needed to create the shape. One worked solution is given.

Trigonometric Graphs and Transformations ppt

(0)

The main part of this PowerPoint is 30 slides, it begins with the calculation and shape of the three Trig graphs, then introduces the four ways in which the graphs can be transformed f(x) = A sin B(x+C)+D. Each of the transformations are considered individually with examples, then each has three “state the function” questions for students to answer verbally (slides 14, 18 ,23, 27). Next, an example of a function with all four transformations is worked with steps in appropriate order. The main part of the slide show concludes with another statement of the “four-transformation form of equation”, and an example of the four resultant transformations are shown step by step.
Slides 32 -34 are graph drawing worksheets with answers appearing, for which masters are included as word documents since you may wish to use these for students practice work. Slide 35 is a table to complete with values for the given formulas each with 2 transformations, and slide 36 shows the 3 standard Excel drawn graphs.
