This resource compises 7 detailed lesson plans and resources to support them focused on developing careers education for students in Year 7 which can be used as part of PSHE or Citizenship programmes. <br /> <br /> Self Development<br /> i) To re-enforce understanding of the key words that they have learned and be able to teach them to pupils that are younger than themselves.<br /> <br /> Career Exploration<br /> i) To understand what Career, Job and occupation mean, how they are different and also to be able to describe different jobs within occupations and careers.<br /> ii) Students should be able to explain the reasons why people enter paid employment and that to enter certain jobs requires certain things (eg experience, skills or education).<br /> iii) Identify the range of work roles in the school and how they enable the school to function on a day-to-day basis.<br /> <br /> Career Management <br /> i) To describe their previous achievements from both in and out of school and understand how they can be put into different categories.<br /> ii) What Gross monthly income means and what a day in the life of a given occupation would look like.<br /> iii) To understand that you need to balance your income and outgoings each month and then also how to do it. Richard III is used as the focus of study although the lesson will not give away too much by way of information about the Princes in the Tower should you be looking at this later on. It relies on students knowing what a hypothesis (an initial idea, based on limited evidence that can be tested by further study) is in order to do the engagement activity. A common mistake made when teaching chronology to Year 7 is to ask them to complete a timeline of their life. A HMI said to me that students do this in Year 3. An understanding of Chronology however is a key concept in the teaching of History. Once grasped it can support students understanding of change and continuity in particular, in addition it also serves to support students piecing together sources in order to make sense of historical events. In this lesson students are asked to put 4 things in the right order. They then move on to more technical terms and identifying which century years are in.

This sequence of learning will almost certainly be at least two lessons and is aimed at developing students understanding of how historians establish 'significance' when looking at people or events. After looking at a single person, and being supported to make a judgement, they will look at three wars of the Twentieth Century and then make a judgement about which was the most significant and why? This is done using a significance judgement sheet. Students will then use a writing frame to support them to write up their findings.
