Using a phone + Making Small Talk

Particularly useful for year 11 students and 6th form students with ASD or social communication difficulties.
Often parents are pushing for more independence and young people are scared of making phone calls or talking to receptionists.
This resource can be used in a role place
Then office to office phones in a school environment
On one occassion I was working out of my office and calling up to 6th form to role play ordering a pizza with a 17 year old 6th former who was staying home alone and his parent wanted him to order take away food. The member of staff we called in 6th form got carried away with the role play and ended up writing the pizza order down and passing it to her colleague sat next to her!
Can eleviate a lot of worries and stress about speaking to the public.
Get other staff involved after the role play practice - it really helps!

If you need to do a check in or check out with a student these are some helpful resources.
These also link well to the 5 point scale used for ASD students or those with difficulty with emotional regulation.
Students who struggle with communication will benefit from these resources.
Students who cannot express how they feel and cannot participate in discussions or reflections.
We have plastic folders with each of these resources in, each form tutor and each teaching assistant has a pack folded in their work pack.
Front line staff in well being and attendance have one too.
I hope it helps you to gather student voice.
Jenny =-)

Life skills 19 lessons over various topics
Can be covered quickly in 30 mins or up to 60 mins if interacting and allowing discussion
Before I bought into a life skills resource for year 9 boys I made these 19 lessons. I have taught them myself and they can take from 30-60 minutes and in some cases they had computers or laptops and researched and made their own presentations
One student in the group of 5 had an EHCP where some of these topics were asked to be taught - of course it had to be quite bespoke. The only thing I could do was plan them.
They are varied and broad and I hope will be useful for SENDCOs, Form tutors or life skills teachers.
If I can save anyone hours of work these are easily adaptable as starting points or ready to go.
1 Finances
Money handling (budgets, wants & needs)
Meal Preparation, Finding Ingredients, Dinner Conversation.
Going to a shop
2 Independence
Kitchen Hazards & Safety
Safety & Security in the home + fire
Sweeping, dusting
3 Intoxicants
Intoxicants
Alcohol
Smoking
Cannabis
4 Travel
Walking
Public Transport
(bus, train ,plane)
Safety in a car as a driver and passenger
5 Social Media
Online safety and understanding the influence of social media
Self esteem and profiles
6 Emotional Intelligence
Recognising feelings and emotions & Coping Strategies.
7 Communication
Communication Strategies – different audiences
Making own presentation and presenting next lesson
Present and peer marking
8 Problem Solving
Finding Solutions - Everyday Problems, Rare Problems.
9 Relationships
Different types of relationships sympathy
Different types of relationships loyalty
10 Conflict
Bullying, Self – Defence according to law.
