Lesson Plan/ Teaching Idea for pupils to understand Loci. A teacher directed practical activity which allows students to physically form the loci required in most GCSE maths courses.
Pre exam/ end of term presentation. An assembly for year 11s that looks at motivation, learning from mistakes, definition of insanity etc - with you tube videos of David Beckham and Roger Bannister
An activity which is completed individually to encourage students to reflect on their behaviour in the classroom and how it impacts on others. Part of a strategy to develop student responsibility.
Users will need to input specific school terminology for discipline measures as indicated by italics.
Practice drawing Vectors. A board game designed to give students practice in plotting vector journeys. This game is designed to give students the opportunity to handle free vector displacements using combinations of the a vector (one horizontal unit) and the b vector (one unit in 030° direction)
You may wish to use the vector highway code to explain the ‘moves’ allowed in vector geometry.
Statistics Revison. Assessing pupil progress in Maths. suitable for use at KS3. Activity designed to promote independent learning, particularly at the revision stage. Learner is given responsibility of producing a revision aid; instruction sheet gives guidelines. Proved to be popular with students.
Explanation of sanctions ladder; users will want to adapt terminology and procedures to their own institutions. Introduced in September 2008, the sanctions ladder has been instrumental in identifying problem students and recognising the need for support mechanisms at different stages.
Given a sequence of numbers the student is encouraged to discover upon which multiplication table the sequence is based and then to work out the 'disguise'
Powerpoint uses the analogy of moving team players to the opposing team to illustrate how terms appear to move from one side of the equals sign to the other when solving equations. the concrete nature of the example seems to suit less able learners but is equally valuable for the more able, especially those who like sport!
Arrange class in friendship pairs. One of the pair forms a group which can then be tutored through the algebra questions by the teacher so that they can assist their partner using the help sheet. The other half completes the revision questions under exam questions. Alternatively, depending on the ability of the half group, they can be taught a new topic which they in turn can then teach the other half of the class later in the lesson or on another occasion. Students - even the most challenging! - seem to like the responsibility of looking after their friends’ learning.
Modelled on the 'old' Edexcel Unit 2 stage 1 multiple choice paper, quiz can be completed individually or in pairs. Numerical answers should be totalled at the end. To add excitement, use survey monkey and allow students to text their answers which can then be displayed live on the interactive whiteboard. Alternatively, students can simply write their responses and first correct wins!
