Description: • Over 600 vocabulary cards • These science vocab cards are based on ‘progression in vocabulary’ across KS1 and KS2. Words are relevant to National Curriculum content for specific year groups. • Where possible, words used in previous year groups/units are omitted for older year groups, to avoid repetition and clutter. • They are designed to be used as part of science displays where the words are large enough to be read from anywhere in the classroom. There are blank cards for teachers to write on their own words relevant to the topic. • Each file contains blank vocab boxes for teachers to write their own words if needed • Each word has the unit title and year group on it for ease of organisation. • Word outlines colour coded red for chemistry, blue for physics and green for biology. • Files are set to A3 size. • Editable publisher files available on request Ideas for display: • In our context, vocab sets were given to year groups to trim, laminate and build into a vocab ladders using treasury tags that can simply be pinned to the wall (see photo). Advice for use: • Can be used for independent writing, or verbally based elicitation or assessment work with science. • As with any display, they only have an impact if incorporated into planning/teaching of science lessons. • Great for promoting this exciting subject across the whole school/key stage/year group in a consistent way.

Test scheme based on NC statutory framework. Around 500 words ordered from easiest to most challenging within phase objectives. Assembly certificates included. How the tests work: Every child starts at Opal test 1 when they start in Year 1, 2, 3 and 5. The words are either read out by the teacher, being put into a sentence each time, or the children listen to the tests from a recording. The tests are marked and the words the child spells incorrectly form the homework for the next week. This process is repeated until full marks are achieved in a test - this helps to consolidate prior learning with the words the child had previously learned. Once both the test (and dictated passage) have been spelt correctly, the next test’s word list will be handed out for home learning. If a child completes both tests for a stage, they will receive a certificate. The different stages are illustrated by the certificates around the explanation letter. Spelling test scores are kept between the teacher and the child and no child shall be required to tell others about their weekly score. Children naturally will want to improve on their own score – often, knowing that their test score will be shared with the class will introduce an unnecessary element of fear which will hinder learning. (Optional) In order to move on to the next test, children will have to spell words from a dictated passage correctly. The passage will incorporate many of the words from the test. Children will not have access to the passages dictated!
