DT project - Insect/Bug Hotels

(1)
DT project suitable for KS2 where pupils design and make an insect/bug hotel. There is a section where pupils look into the importance of insects in ecosystems and where they feature in food webs. This might make the project suitable if you are doing a science theme on something similar.

Hope you find it useful.

About 3 days worth of work.

I created these activities to complete with my class during a recent inspection. Pupils can work independently or in pairs or groups (it's up to you). (Group 1 High ability, Group 2 Middle, Group 3 Low)

The areas covered include:
Measuring
Angles
Numerical Reasoning
Graphs
Problem Solving
and number skills

Hope you find this useful

DT - Catapults and Trebuchets

This is one of my favourite DT projects! Lots of design and engineering opportunities and great fun.

The children are given the task of researching and then designing and making their own catapult or trebuchet. Could link well to topics on e.g. War or History or simply be a stand alone fun DT project.

If you don't feel too confident about the DT there are plenty of online images and guides that the children can follow.

I've only done this once so far but my class loved it and I'm looking forward to doing it again next year.

The project culminated in pupils having a competition to see which catapult could launch a ping pong ball the furthest.

Hope you enjoy.

Design a Bridge - DT Project

I have done this DT project several times now and it is great.

I usually use art straws but have also just provided the class with newspapers to create their own rolled paper structures. Recently, i did the project with a year 6 class and we used wood. This also involved sawing and glue guns which was great fun but required a risk assessment.

Hope you find the resource useful.

DT - Design a Bird Box

(1)
Great DT project where pupils research and then design their own bird nesting box.

I've done this with pupils from years 3 up to year 6 and all have found it to be really good fun. I do find that working with older year groups allows more opportunities to use saws, hammers and nails. However, if you have a good classroom assistant there's no reason why you can't do this with younger pupils.

Hope you find it useful.

Year 4 or 5 Maths Lesson (Number) - Including lesson plan and differentiated resources

(0)
Year 4 and/or 5
This is a Maths lesson I planned and used during an inspection.

The focus of the lesson was to develop pupils understanding of:
Fractions/decimals and Percentages
Simple Algebra/problems involving brackets
Mixed number problems

The tasks worked as a carousel of activities with pupils working on each activity for approximately 8 mins.

Differentiation - pupils self differentiated by opting to choose simple, challenging or very challenging problems. This was identified as an extremely positive way of encouraging pupils to work within their own limits while allowing them to challenge themselves when they felt confident.

I hope you find the lesson material useful

A brilliant DT project (1 week of afternoons) where pupils design and make their own elastic band powered cars.

I've done this with pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 and with my own children at home and they love it.

When I've done it in school we make sure to race the cars at the end of the project. The races can vary to ensure there are lots of winners e.g. fastest car, car that travels the furthest, best design, best team effort etc.

Hope you find it useful.

Poetry - Activity and Display

This is a really lovely activity where pupils write their own emotion poems.

These are quite simple and would suit Year 4 but I also find that older pupils can get a lot out of this too. Helps to improve their descriptive writing when they start to think about different emotions a character might feel and why.

When I've done this in the past I've displayed the children's work - Have included some words and headings for display in the resource.

This is a project which I've done both in class and as a homework task. Pupils are given the challenge of designing and making their own musical instrument. When I've done it before I always finish off by arranging a class orchestra where the pupils get a chance to play their instrument...Fun, loud and interesting.

Hope you find it useful.
