Analysis & class/homework tasks based on ‘Telegraph Wires’ by Ted Hughes. This is a KS4 set text for Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English 2023-2025. However, it can be used as an approach to analysing any poetry being studied and adapted to KS3 or KS5.

In this pack there are PDFs, which include:

  • a starter linked to the themes in the poem,
  • questions to help pupils summarise the poem independently,
  • a summary of the poem,
  • a blank storyboard template for pupils to fill in with images and quotations from the text that summarise the poem,
  • colour-coded, comprehensive analysis, including comments on language, structure, context*, voice and tone. *(Contextual comments are linked to the poem rather than being stand-alone comments),
  • tips for making revision notes.
  • a revision grid template for pupils to fill in, with prompts to ensure pupils include comments on language, structure, context, voice and tone. As well as, reminders to develop ideas using shallow, deep and profound comments.
  • an exam style question.
  • an extension (creative) task that links to the themes in the poem.
  • a mark scheme which can be used for teacher, self or peer assessment of the poetry essay. The mark scheme includes pupil friendly questions showing them how they might move to the next band/level.

An attractive presentation. I am sure the second line is 'comes alive in your ear'.
