10 starter-style I-D-E-A (Identify, Describe, Explain, Analyse) starters covering 10 topics and themes. Students complete the ones they are comfortable with (eg lower ability complete 'Identify' where they simply can list their thoughts, higher ability complete 'Explain' and 'Analyse' where more detail and sentences can be used. Some of the next one can then be completed based on what they thought, to push them a little further.
Themes are:
1/2. Keywords 1&2
3. Art
4. Makeup
5. Beliefs
6. Skull Art
7. Danse Macabre
8. Food and Drink
9. Food Ideas
10. Origins
There's actually more than 10 altogether on the ten themes as some have more than one sheet, enough to print out for a whole class and each student to have a different one to aid in differentiation as some are easier to generate words from than others.
Also included is a powerpoint with images related to Day of The Dead for printing as handouts/inspiration.
Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet.
Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete.
Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen.
The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!
