How many 2D shapes can you see in this festive image?

A fun and easy starter, extension or consolidation activity for Key Stage 1 (KS1) / Key Stage 2 (KS2) learning their extensive 2D shapes. They can identify circles, ovals rectangles / oblongs / quadrilaterals, squares, triangles, pentagons, hexagons, octagons, and more. Can you find the trapezium? These shapes are shown in the “commonly recognisable” orientation as well as irregular, count the sides to name the shape!

Easy to differentiate, children could use a different colour to circle the different 2D shapes, or count them up as they find them and name them. Encourage the children draw their own festive picture using all the different 2D shapes they have learnt!

This file downloads as an image, so you can insert it into your school’s standard template in a worksheet or add it to an existing worksheet. It can also be printed on its own. Alternatively, children could complete this activity using iPads / tablets and editing it on the screen. A further option is to project it onto the interactive whiteboard / screen, for the children to search for the shapes as a starter activity. They can record their answers in their books, on individual whiteboards or share them out loud, collaboratively as a class.
