“black with snow” – this defies the normal perception of snow. It is alien and unrecognisable to the soldiers as it is now a force that harms them and not a source of beauty in its usual splendour of whiteness. It has transformed and is now the sinister enemy; it has been blackened by the way it is now attacking the soldiers and exacerbating their already pitiful plight. Snow is normally associated with purity and beauty – it now has no remnants of these qualities and this transformation encapsulates what has happened to the lives of the soldiers; their lives have become transformed and unrecognisable
