Whilst searching though my old PGCE folder I discovered this great document produced by Ofsted, showcasing generic grade descriptions and supplementary subject-specific (Geography) guidance for inspectors on making judgements during visits to schools: http://dera.ioe.ac.uk/19125/6/Supplementary%20subject-specific%20guidance%20for%20geography.pdf
For my departmental INSET/meeting task I have snipped the 'outstanding' criteria for geography specific comments for 'quality of teaching' and 'quality of curriculum'. This produced a list of 18 points. I've turned this into a task whereby our department are going to discuss ideas: How can we achieve this? What are the limitations and how can we overcome this? and How and when can this be measured/how to evaluate the success of this throughout the year?
Please note, like anything Ofsted produced, the list most obviously isn't a 'checklist for outstanding', nor is this guidance intended for use on the Section 5 whole school inspection. However I strongly feel its a great starting point and group exercise, particularly for new HODs like myself and new departments/members of staff.
